To All Concerned:
By now the news of the cancellation of the 2015 Fur Rendezvous Open World Championship Sled Dog Race has reached many of you. Some of you watched with interest the pictures posted on Facebook of our efforts to fill in especially challenging sections of backtrail with nearly 4 dump truck loads of snow (donated by the Municipality), sledful by sledful, shovelful by shovelful. On Saturday, the persistant above freezing temperatures and rain simply made our efforts ineffective. As Dan Kaushagen, trail boss stated, “We can fill in holes but we canʼt fill in 10 miles of trail.” The unseasonable weather also took its toll on the 7 miles of bike trails that connect 4th Avenue to our trails leaving ice on overpass approaches, glazed trails with no edges, or even bare pavement and that was the final straw. Even our most diligent efforts cannot create a trail under these conditions.
ASDRA commonly uses a “drop dead date” of 10 days before the start of the race to make the call. This year was different. The Anchorage Centennial, the grants secured by ASDRA to support off-the-road system teams able to be used only in 2015, and finally, the Attla dream of Joe Bifelt, his grand-nephew from his Frank Attla Youth Program, running this yearʼs race drove us to give the trails and the weather every last chance to resolve into a race trail. In the future, we will make every effort to make the assessment of our race potential under our usual time frame.
On Saturday, February 28 at 12 Noon on 4th Avenue at D Street - the start and finish line of the Rendezvous - GAI will host a dedication ceremony honoring George Attla. Please make time to join the mushing community and those Rondy spectators who loved George Attla for this event. I wish with all my heart that the event was couched in our race but that is not to be.
I hope to see you downtown on Saturday,
 Janet Clarke,
Race Marshall

All trails Except the 4 mile are open for training.  They are still bumpy.
